‘Superman’ Andrew Strauss sends back the dangerous Adam Gilchrist

The 2005 Ashes was an iconic series which saw England winning one the most intense Test rivalry at home. It had several red hot and amazing moments which the fans still cherish about and one of those was Andrew Strauss’ catch at second slips which saw sent Adam Gilchrist packing.

During the fourth Test at Trent Bridge, Strauss stunned everyone with a catch which was rightly termed as Superman catch. Batting first, England posted 477 on a wicket which had some purchase for the bowlers. Australia kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were struggling at 163 for seven. In the 43rd over, Andrew Flintoff managed to get that extra bounce on his delivery which Gilchrist didn’t anticipate and tried to push it down near third man. He only managed to get a thick outside edge and the ball went flying towards the left of Strauss positioned at the second slip. Strauss dived towards his left and stretched each and every part of his tendon to obtain to the red cherry. The ball eventually found itself in the safe hands of Strauss who even after landing didn’t let it leap out. The crowd erupted in jubilation and why not? Australia were bowled out for a mere score of 218.

Eventually, England won the Test by three wickets and this win also helped them win the Ashes series as the fifth and the final Test ended in a draw.
