Tamil Nadu gain first innings lead against Madhya Pradesh

Replying to Tamil Nadu’s first innings total of 486, Madhya Pradesh were all out for 289

Already assured of a place in the knockout stage, Tamil Nadu gained a 197-run first innings lead over Madhya Pradesh in their penultimate preliminary league match of Elite Group-B Ranji Trophy cricket tie on Friday.

Replying to hosts’ first innings total of 486, Madhya Pradesh were all out for 289 in 101.2 overs and at close Tamil Nadu were 30 for the loss of two wickets in their second innings.

Madhya Pradesh opener Zafar Ali was instrumental in resurrecting his team’s innings today and made a worthwhile contribution of 98 runs. Taking to the crease today with a tottering overnight total of 3 for 50, Zafar Ali was running out of partners as wickets fell at regular intervals at the other end.

However, before edging to wicket keeper Dinesh Karthik of Jaganathan Kaushik’s last delivery of 92nd over, Zafar had stitched two useful stands of 46 runs for the fourth with Jalal Saxena (43) and then 73 runs for the sixth wicket with Ramiz Khan (37).

Tamil Nadu captain and main medium pace bowler, Lakshmipathy Balaji claimed two for 40, while debutant fast bowler Jaganathan Kaushik took 3 for 48 and Malolan Rangarajan ended up with 2 for 56.

In reply, Tamil Nadu lost the wicket of inform opener Abhinav Mukund for eight in the fourth over and his partner Murali Vijay retired hurt at five. After Subramaniam Badrinath was adjudged leg before the wicket to medium pacer T Sudhindra for a duck, M.Kaushik Gandhi (2) and Dinesh Karthik (14) were at the crease when stumps were drawn.(PTI)
