England have fought back well in the second session of Day Two against Bangladesh to end at 244 at tea. England were 163 for 8 at lunch and it seemed like it would take an herculean task to wipe off the deficit from there. Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid batted beautifully and England took a 24-run lead and have the initiative in this match at the moment. Woakes was dismissed for 46, but Rashid fought on to remain unbeaten on 44 and as a result have given England a real chance of winning this game now. Woakes and Rashid put on 99 for the ninth wicket. Bangladesh took the new ball immediately after it was available and not surprising it was Mehedi Hasan to bowl first up with that ball and struck immediately. Woakes was caught in the leg slip after he was beautifully set up. Woakes was in fact caught off a full toss from Sabbir Rahman, but the ball was above waist high and Woakes got a lucky break. Barring that, the batsmen looked in control throughout. From 144 for 8, England have managed to add exactly 100 runs for the last two wickets, to put themselves in control of the game. England will now hope to pick up a couple of quick wickets when play resumes.
Mehedi claimed his second five-for in as many Tests for Bangladesh. England have therefore scored 113 runs and lost five wickets in the first session of the day. Bangladesh made a bright beginning to Day Two as they dismissed Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes within four overs after play began. Moeen was out after he missed a sweep and his off stumps was rattled. Stokes was dismissed after a sharp catch at forward short leg for a duck. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow did hold fort for a while. Their 45-run stand was ended by Mehedi, who trapped Bairstow in front off the first delivery of his new spell. This brought debutant Zafar Ansari to the crease. He was off the mark after the ball took an outside edge and bisected the two slip fielders.
Root however, carried his fight on. He got to his fifty off 104 balls and he was going to be key for England, if they were to wipe off this deficit. Root did not played any silly shot throughout his innings. After getting a good start in the first Test, Root looked determined to make this innings count right from the beginning. He was however trapped in front by Taijul Ismal after a missed the ball, playing it off the back foot. England were in serious trouble when he was dismissed for 56. Ansari too looked calm and composed. Despite getting a couple of outside edges, he managed to stick it out for some time. But he was not third time lucky as an outside edge found Hom at second slip. His debut innngs came to an end for 13.
It was Bangladesh, who had won the toss and elected to bat first. England decided to rest Stuart Broad and Gareth Batty for this match. As a result, Steven Finn was roped in and England gave a debut to all-rounder Ansari. Despite undergoing an endoscopy, Sabbir Rahman was declared fit to play this match for Bangladesh, who got in Shuvagata Hom in place of Shaiful Islam
Bangladesh 220 (Tamim Iqbal 104 , Mominul Haque 66 ; Moeen Ali 5 for 57, Chris Woakes 3 for 30) trail England 224 ( Joe Root 56, Chris Woakes 46, Adil Rashid 44*; Mehedi Hasan 6 for 82, Taijul Islam 3 for 65) by 24 runs
