The Indian team was fined by match referee Ranjan Madugalle for maintaining a slow over rate on the third day of the fifth and final Test at the Oval.

Madugalle, a member of the Emirates Elite Umpire Panel of ICC Match Referees, delivered his verdict after he found the visiting team to be three overs short of target at the end of the match after time allowances were taken into consideration.

The official ICC rules which govern the minor over-rate offences state that the players will be fined 10 percent of their match fees for every over the team fails to bowl in the allotted time, while the captain faces double the fine. As a result of this, skipper MS Dhoni was fined 60 percent of his match fees while the members of the rest of the team were fined 30 percent each.

Dhoni will be handed a one-match suspension if he is found to repeat this offence over the course of the next 12 months, as per the provisions of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. Dhoni has been penalized for slow over-rates thrice after winning the World Cup in 2011, one instance of which ended in the form of a one-match ban.

India succumbed to a humilitating innings and 244-run  defeat against England on the third day of the fifth and final Test at the Oval. India were bowled out for 148 in their first innings, and failed to restrict the English batsmen as the hosts piled 486 runs on their plate in reply. The Indians managed to put up a show even worse than all the disasters of this tour combined by getting dismissed six runs short of the 100-run mark.
