The Maharashtra Assembly has recommended batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar’s name for the highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ to the Centre.

The motion congratulating Indian team on the World Cup success and recommendation for Tendulkar’s name was moved by state’s chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, and was supported by all political parties, reports said.

“We recommend that Tendulkar be conferred with the Bharat Ratna for his contribution to sports,” Chavan stated.

He also announced that the state government will felicitate Tendulkar and pacer Zaheer Khan with a cash prize of Rs. 1 crore, and Rs. 50 lakh to the team’s support staff Mayank Parekh (logistics manager) and Ramesh Mane (masseur).

“This achievement has not come easy for him and it has required 21 years of hard work and unblemished career. Sachin is a complete team man despite frequent criticism that he plays for his individual records,” said Eknath Khadse, Leader of Opposition.
