Former England skipper Michael Vaughan wasn’t too surprised that The Three Lions were eliminated from the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy within the group stages itself. Afghanistan proved to be too good for England in Lahore on Wednesday. The underdogs went on to win a thriller by 8 runs and ended up knocking out England in the process.
Following the end of England’s highly disappointing Champions Trophy campaign which saw them lose to both of their first 2 matches against Australia and Afghanistan respectively, Vaughan took to his official X account to slam the English team.
Brilliant from Afghanistan .. Throughly deserved win .. England just haven’t played good enough white ball cricket for a couple of years .. this result isn’t a surprise in these conditions .. #ChampionsTrophy2025

“Brilliant from Afghanistan .. Throughly deserved win .. England just haven’t played good enough white ball cricket for a couple of years .. this result isn’t a surprise in these conditions,” Vaughan said on X.
With the Champions Trophy elimination, England continued their woeful form in ICC ODI tournaments. They finished at the seventh spot on the table in the 2023 ODI World Cup which saw them not make it through to the semis.

It will be interesting to see if skipper Jos Buttler will be able to retain his captaincy following such massive failures in the one-day format.
