Chasing a target of 164, Chepauk Super Gillies snatched a comfortable victory against Madurai Super Giant in Match No. 19 of Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2017. At the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai, the Giant batted first to put up a total of 163 for 7 which the Gillies chased down with one over still in hand. With the victory, the Gillies get to the second position of the points table with victory in four of the five matches they have played, while the Giant are now at the bottom of the table, failing to register a single victory in their four matches.
Gillies won the toss and put the Giant to bat first, who had a solid start to their innings. Both openers, Arun Karthik (55) and Shijit Chandran (67) scored individual half-centuries to put up a 116-run opening stand. But Rajagopal Sathish’s 2 wickets in the 13th over, which triggered a collapse and restricted the total which could have touched the 180-run mark. They lost another wicket in the same over as a result of a run out. No other batsman managed to play a big knock after the openers were removed and the Giant’s innings came to an end with a total just beyond par.
Gillies’ chase was more of a team effort, with Thalaivan Sargunam (41) building a strong opening partnership with Hari Gopinath (23). Later it was Antony Dhas’ 16-ball 26 and Uthirasamy Sasidev’s unbeaten 30 off 22 that sealed the deal for their team. Chandran was adjudged the Player of teh Match for his 37-ball 61 despite his side losing for his commendable efforts.
Brief scores:
Madurai Super Giants 163 for 7 in 20 overs (Arun Karthik 55, Shijit Chandran 61; Rajagopal Sathish 2 for 30, Yo Mahesh 1 for 14) lost to Chepauk Super Gillies 164 for 5 in 19 overs (Thalaivan Sargunam 41, Uthirasamy Sasidev 30*, Antony Dhas 26; R Karthikeyan 2 for 31) by 5 wickets.
