While West Indies cricket slumped to one of their worst defeats in the first ever day-night Test in England, Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) continued their domination in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2017. Their 7-wicket victory against Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) at Providence Stadium, Guyana helped them retain the top spot in the points table. The win was architected collectively by the bowlers and a blazing 45-ball 65 not out from Brendon McCullum.
TKK elected to field and the Martin Guptill-led GAW lost their captain in the fourth over with the score on 16 for 2. Jason Mohammad’s patient 58-ball 66 guided the hosts to 130. None of the TKR bowlers conceded over 7 an over except skipper Dwayne Bravo but the was the one to clean up Mohammad. Sunil Narine was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with exceptional figures of 4-1-11-1. He was the one who got the wicket of Guptill with a classical off-spinner’s delivery that found a way between his bat and pad, on its voyage to the stumps. Narine later opened the innings and managed only 1. Guptill may have failed but his former national captain and opening partner McCullum was at his blazing best. He added 55 with Darren Bravo for the third wicket.
TKR cruised to a win in the 16th over. The road ahead for GAW doesn’t look too bright at the moment. They have now lost 5 of their 6 games. The other game between St Lucia Stars and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots ended in a no result after a downpour. Stars batting first were 46 for 1 after 8.1 overs when the skies opened up at Basseterre, St Kitts.
