Kampala: The Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has confirmed that its team will now play in the ICC U-19 World Cup qualifier in Malaysia. Originally the qualifier was meant to take place in Nepal, but the International Cricket Council (ICC) decided to move the tournament to Kuala Lumpur to run October 14 to 25, reports Xinhua. Justine Ligyalingi, the Chief Executive Officer of the UCA, confirmed on Friday that they received communication from ICC indicating that the tournament that been moved. Nepal was due to host the five-team competition, however, following a series of assessments following the recent earthquakes which devastated the country, the ICC decided to relocate the event to the Malaysian capital. Ligyalingi explained that the ICC decided the best choice was to move the tournament due to the tragic events in Nepal in recent months, coupled with the infrastructure damage caused by the earthquakes and the on-going relief operations.
“It is good this communication has come in early and our team will start training next month to prepare for this qualifier expected to be very explosive,” explained Ligyalingi. The five teams competing in the event are Ireland, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Uganda and USA.
