India Women posted 163 for 5 in the opening match of ICC Womens World T20 2016 against Bangladesh at Begaluru on Tuesday. This was India’s highest-ever Twenty20 International (T20I) total with their previous best being 151 for 5 against the same opponents in 2014 in Sylhet. Veda Krishnamurthy and Jhulan Goswami remained unbeaten for India at 33 and 2 respectively. Veda and middle-order batsman Harmanpreet Kaur posted a stand of 41 runs for the fourth wicket and that ensured India crossed the 160-mark. Interestingly, this Bangladesh side has never even touched the 120-mark in the T20Is. The Indian openers Mithali Raj and Vellaswamy Vanitha gave India a flier after posting a stand of 62 runs for the first wicket before Vanitha was dismissed in the eighth over.  Live Cricket Scorecard: India Women vs Bangladesh Women, Women’s T20 World Cup 2016, Match 1 Group B at Bangalore

Nahida Akter was the bowler who opened the account for Bangladesh, making the first breakthrough. Vanitha had been trying to hit every ball, the 16-year-old went wide this time and Vanitha missed it badly to knock her stumps off to leaving India at 62 for 1.

Vanitha was promoted ahead of India’s regular opener Smriti Madhana with latter coming at No.3. Unfortunately for India, Madhana only lasted four deliveries before Fahima Khatun trapped her leg before wicket before the top-order batsman could score even a single run. That dismissal saw Harmanpreet Kaur walk in to join Mithali at the crease. Kaur who has 156 runs from 17 World T20 matches, along with the Indian skipper added another 32 runs on board.

The duo looked unstoppable at the moment, smashing all the Bangladesh bowlers all over the Chinnaswamy. Just when the projected score crossed 160-170, Rumana bagged her second wicket of the day by sending Mithali back to the pavilion, leaving the small crowd in the stadium quiet and denied the Indian skipper her fourth fifty in the World T20s.

Meanwhile, Harmanpreet smashed two out of the four sixes of the Indian innings with the other two being coming off two excellent slog sweeps from Veda Krishnamurthy.

Brief Scores:

India Women 163 for 5 (Mithali Raj 42, Harmanpreet Kaur 40, Veda Krishnamurthy 36*; Fahima Khatun 2 for 31) vs Bangladesh Women.
