New Delhi: Tripura defeated Odisha by 37 runs to register a consolation win in their final inconsequential Group C match of the Vijay Hazare Trophy One-Day cricket tournament on Friday. The win hardly had any effect on the Group C standings as Tripura finished at the bottom with just four points while Odisha is just a rung above with equal number of points. Friday’s match was of mere formality as both the sides were out of the knock-out reckoning even before the start of the encounter having lost five consecutive games earlier. Opting to bat, Tripura rode on opener Samrat Singha’s 56 and Parvinder Singh’s 65 before he retired hurt to score a modest 206 all out in 49.2 overs. UPDATES: Vijay Hazare Trophy 2015-16

For Odisha Deepak Behera (2/26), Biplab Samantray (2/31), Subham Nayak (2/37) and Basant Mohanty (2/41) picked up two wickets apeiece. Defending the modest target, Chiranjit Paul (3/34) and Rajesh Banik (3/35) shared six wickets between them to bundle out Odisha for 169 in 44.3 overs. Besides the duo, Swapan Das picked two wickets. Deepak Behera top-scored for Odisha with a 33-ball 29.

The matches are being played virtually every day which means that teams do not have enough time to recover from losses. Conversely, a team that is on a roll will be helped because their momentum stays intact. Karnataka are the current defending champions of Vijay Hazare Trophy, but the 2015-16 edition could see a new champion.
