Virat Kohli‘s aggressive intent during his captaincy debut in the Adelaide Test has impressed everyone. There were suggestions from the various corners that Kohli should be named as India‘s Test captain immediately. Even former Australian skipper Ian Chappell supported this idea too. But according to Dilip Vengsarkar, the former Indian captain, still it is early days for ‘captain’ Kohli and he should be given bit more time before handing over the responsibility of leading India in white clothings.
“He [Kohli] is good, a captain for the future. But Dhoni [MS] has been selected as the captain and is doing a good job,” said the Mumbai and India legend. He was talking with the media, after releasing “Guts and Glory”, a book authored by Makarand Waingankar, at Mumbai Press Club on Friday.
The book, published by Jaico, features 26 past and present Indian cricketers — including former captains Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Ajit Wadekar, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Vengsarkar, Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli and current skipper MS Dhoni, among others.
Vengsarkar expressed his view about the controversial Decision Review System (DRS) and its application. In the ongoing series, the India had to suffer a lot because of some poor umpiring and lack of DRS. For him its time for Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to stop opposing DRS. “I was also of the view that since it’s not 100 per cent [correct], DRS was not adequate. But the wrong umpiring decisions in this series have convinced me, that we should accept DRS,” he said.
Vengsarkar also talked about the revival of Mumbai cricket. Mumbai had a poor time in domestic cricket of late. In their Ranji Trophy opener, they even lost to a Jammu and Kashmir. But for the Mumbai legend, Vengsarkar its not the end of the world. According to him, Mumbai is a team in transition and the selectors and fans have to show patience with them.
Former Mumbai captain and current selector Milind Rege and current Bengal chief selector Raju Mukherjee were the other notable guests, who were present there at the event.
