India’s batting maestro and former captain Virat Kohli has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he thinks his time as a Test cricket player is complete. The board was informed about the decision earlier this week, and Kohli is most probably not going to feature in the upcoming series against England.
According to a report in the Indian Express, the BCCI has asked Virat Kohli to reconsider his decision, though he is yet to give any response. The Indian team selectors are going to meet in a few days in order to select the squad for England tour, and this decision by Kohli has left them in a state of shock.
“He has made up his mind and has informed the board that he is moving on from Test cricket. The BCCI has urged him to rethink as the crucial England tour is coming up. He is yet to revert on the request,” sources said.
According to the report, Virat Kohli had been thinking about retiring from the longest format of the game since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he had scored a century in Perth but failed to have a significant impact in rest of the four matches.
In case Virat Kohli retires from the red-ball format, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are going to be the most senior players in the team. Even though he has had low outcome in the red-ball format in recent time, Shubman Gill is a strong contender who might be given the leadership role for the England Test series
