Left-out India opener Virender Sehwag has apparently turned down the offer to play for Essex, which was reportedly later offered to Gautam Gambhir.
Paul Grayson, head coach of Essex told Asian Age, “Virender Sehwag was not available.”
When asked who Essex’s first preference was, Grayson replied, “That I am not going to disclose.”
However, he added that Essex had the option of selecting only one overseas player.
Sehwag’s coach AN Sharma said, “What I gather is Sehwag was not keen to play. If he chooses to play, any county will welcome him. He has not been able to practice at the academy because of the heavy rains.”
Neither Sehwag nor his wife was available for comments. Sehwag’s rejection meant Gambhir will be able to play for the club.
“We are delighted that Gambhir has agreed to join us for the remainder of the season,” said Derek Bowden, Essex County Cricket Club chief executive.
“With regard to player recruitment this determined by our cricket committee following recommendations from the coaching staff and team captain,” he concluded.
