Laxman is one of India’s finest ever Test batsmen, with over 134 Tests and 8,781 runs at an impressive average of 45.97. He was a contemporary of the likes of Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan, both of whom recently announced their retirements from international cricket. Laxman, in an exclusive column for CricketCountry, wrote of Sehwag: “He considered himself an entertainer whose job was to set up victories for his team. I have never seen him sulk on getting out — whether he was out first ball or for 99 or made 300, his demeanour would remain the same. And if he did get off to a flier, like against England in 2008 when we were chasing 387, he would come back to the dressing room and say, “maine mera kaam kar diya, ab aap log jitao team ko” (I have done my job; now you win it for the team).” VVS Laxman: Virender Sehwag — a Heart of Gold, caring and giving
About Zaheer, Laxman wrote for CricketCountry that: “Zak’s ability to read the game as he grew in international cricket was outstanding. That reading extended beyond just his bowling and into the general situation of the match, which he would analyse very well. That was the reason why he and Anil Kumble were our bowling captains during team meetings.” VVS Laxman: Reminiscing Zaheer Khan as he bids adieu to International Cricket
