The spruced up Wankhede Stadium, venue of the  World Cup final match on April 2, is all geared up to host its first World Cup game when New Zealand take on Canada on Sunday.

It would be the first international encounter in more than three and a half years. The last time when Wankhede hosted an international game was in October 2007 when India clashed with Australia in an ODI fixture.

The Stadium underwent massive renovation since mid-2008 and an amount of Rs 300 crore was spent for the same. The Stadium sports a cantilevered roof and also has bucket seats installed in all stands. The Stadium’s capacity, however, has been reduced from 38,000 to 31,000.

The entire central square of the playing arena has also been relaid.

The Wankhede Stadium would also host another World Cup league tie between Sri Lanka and New Zealand on March 18.
