Rahul Dravid was not only an exceptional batsman and a gentleman cricketer during his playing days, but also an astute leader; much better than what his captaincy record suggests. His cricketing acumen and keen understanding of the game was often put on display during the matches when he led Team India. Recently, one such video surfaced on social media, where ‘The Wall’ can be seen planning a dismissal and getting it executed. The incident is from the fourth ODI of India’s tour to Pakistan in the year 2005-06, where Dravid was leading the team. The skipper had a special plan for Pakistan’s opening batsman Kamran Akmal, and the moment he came on strike, Dravid removed the second slip and placed it at short point, knowing very well Akmal’s tendency to hit in that area.
What happened next was truly phenomenal. Irfan Pathan bowled the very next delivery wide outside off-stump and Akmal hit it straight to Suresh Raina, the best Indian fielder who was strategically placed at short point. After taking the catch, Raina ran straight to his captain Dravid suggesting through his body language that how his masterstroke worked. India won the match as well the series comfortably by a 4-1 margin.
