West Australia have won the Matador Cup after defeating New South Wales in the final by 64 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday. New South Wales could never get going in their chase of 256. Australian allrounder Shane Watson top scored for New South Wales with 83. New South Wales never looked like overhauling Western Australia’ s target of 255. They lost wickets at regular intervals right from the start. They were 10 for two by the end of the fourth over. From here on it was an uphill task.

For Western Australia the pick of the bowlers was fast-bowler Jason Behrendorff. The pacer took five wickets in a brilliant spell. At one stage he was on a hattrick. Watson apart Kurtis Patterson made a handy contribution of 44. At one stage New South Wales were 153 for four. From here on they collapsed to 191 all out with Behrendorff doing the most damage.

Western Australia got off to a quick start after 42 in seven overs but then Gurinder Sandhu claimed Marcus Harris. Then Craig Cummins and Klinger put on 83 runs for the second wicket. Cummins’ dismissal for 47 allowed the New South Wales bowlers to slow down the scoring. Voges took some time to get off the mark but in the end accelerated. KIinger went on undeterred.  After Voges got out for 40 the scoring rate picked up and in the end due to some acceleration in the end Western Australia reached 255 for six. In the end it was enough.
