As West Indies U-19 tactfully used the method of mankad to dismiss Zimbabwe U-19 out of contention for the quarter-finals of the ongoing ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup 2016, it was one of the most shocking, mind-boggling and weird incidents to be have ever witnessed in the history of cricket, and that too in an imprtant ICC event. Although the technique was slammed by few of the experts and was considered as a cheating technique used by the West Indies to go through to the quarter-finals in the mega event; it was on the other hand also mentioned by few of the experts that it was a fair technique and was a perfectly legal method used in the game that falls under the laws of the game as well as the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The incident happened during the match 22 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, when in the last over, the Zimbabweans required justthre runs to win, with a wicket remaining, West Indies bowler Keemo Paul used the mankad technique over non-striking batsman Richard Ngarava, as the umpires went upsatirs and confirmed that he was out. Following the West Indies win, experts in the form of Dean Jones, Ian Bishop and Pommie Mbangwa slammed the use of the technique by the West Indies bowler and said that a warning should have been delivered to the non-striker in the spirit of the game. However, they stayed put with the fact that the decion was perfectly honest and in the laws of the game, that the umpires had chose the right call.
The twitter world reacted to the mankad incident world wide as here are few of the top quotes from the incident:
That is a ridiculous way to finish a game!!! Awful sportsmanship!! #U19wc #WI19vZim19

Right or wrong, just a sad way to end a good game especially with so much on the line #winatallcosts????

Mutes words “mankad” and “mankaded” from timeline.

Rules are rules but the #mankad today was poor sportsmanship. If he was 3foot out his crease then maybe but the poor lad was on the line

I can honestly say I’ve never set off from my mark with the intention to run someone out at the non strikers end #mankad
— Graham Onions (@BunnyOnions) February 2, 2016
If the batter was warned then still tried to steal even a centimetre I could understand people’s reasoning behind the #mankad but…
