The Indian cricket team was seen wearing black armbands during the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal clash against Australia. This decision was made in honour of Padmakar Shivalkar, who took his last breath at the age of 84 in Mumbai. Shivalkar was a well-known name in India’s domestic side and he played a massive role in Bombay’s Ranji Trophy dominance.
A lot of former cricketers have paid their tribute to Shivalkar after his demise, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also decided to pay their tribute by asking the players to wear black armbands along their jerseys.
The BCCI expressed their sorrow on the fate of the former Ranji Trophy star of Mumbai, who had passed away due to age-related issues.
Shivalkar’s name is secured in the history of Ranji Trophy, where he enjoyed a glorious career. He was a part of Bombay’s team that won nine Ranji Trophy titles between 1965 to 1976.
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) deeply mourns the unfortunate demise of Shri Padmakar Shivalkar, who passed away on March 3, 2025. The legendary left-arm spinner was a stalwart of Indian domestic cricket, renowned for his unparalleled skill and dedication to the game,” BCCI said in a statement released on Tuesday.

Despite his brilliance, Shivalkar was not fortunate enough to represent India at the international level. However, his contributions to Indian cricket did not go unnoticed. He was honoured with Col. C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017, which is because of his impact on domestic cricket.
