Pakistan cricketer Younis Khan has agreed to coach Afghanistan cricket team post his retirement. Afghanistan Cricket Board Chairman (ACB) has confirmed the news and board is reportedly finalising the contract. Younis who recently became the first player from Pakistan to score 10,000 runs in Tests announced his retirement, days after his captain Misbah-ul-Haq announced his retirement. The right-handed batsman won’t be the first Pakistan player to serve Afghanistan as a coach. Previously, former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq too was roped in to take up the responsibility as the head coach from which he later stepped down after being offered the position of the chief selector by Pakistan Cricket Board.
Afghanistan Cricket Board Chairman Atif Mashal was quoted in a report from DawnNews saying, “Younis has agreed to coach the Afghan cricket team and the board is currently finalising the contract.”
There have also been media reports that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) wants Younis to work with the national under-19 team and prepare them for the upcoming ICC Youth World Cup.
Apart from, Inzamam, former wicket-keeper batsman Rashid Latif and pacer Kabir Khan have also coached Afghanistan. Though PCB chairman has Shaharyar Khan said the board has some different plans for Younis and they would be revealed only after discussions with Younis.
Younis is currently playing a three-match Test series against West Indies. The series is levelled at 1-1 with the third encounter going on in Dominica. Except for the first Test wherein he scored a fifty, Younis has not been able to score runs and playing in the last Test, Younis managed just 18 runs in the first innings and is 58 runs short of surpassing Sunil Gavaskar (10,112) in runs tally.
