Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) explosive batsman Yuvraj Singh played a steady knock of 44, as SRH finished on a fighting total of 162 for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs, against former champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), in Eliminator of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016 playoffs, at the Ferozshah Kotla Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday. Earlier, KKR skipper Gautam Gambhir won the toss and elected to bowl first on a green and crackly track of Kotla, as he made a couple of changes in the form of Morne Morkel coming in for Shakib Al Hasan, along with R Satish for Ankit Rajpoot, while SRH skipper David Warner too made a couple of changes in the form of Ben Cutting coming in for Kane Williamson, along with Bipul Sharma, who comes in for Karn Sharma. The SRH openers in the form of David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan were off to a shaky start as with just 12 runs on the board, it was Dhawan, who fell for mere 10 to Morkel in the second over, after being bowled up. However, KKR’s opening success was not long lived, as it was followed by a healthy 59-run stand for the second wicket between Warner and Moises Henriques, before Henrqiues fell for 31 to Kuldeep Yadav, after being caught by himself, in the 10th over. The partnership consisted of 31 runs from Henrqiues and 26 from Warner. Warner was soon followed by Warner, who was bowled up by Kuldeep for 28, the very next ball. Nevertheless, it was followed by another steady 49-run stand for the fourth wicket between Yuvraj Singh and Deepak Hooda, as at the score of 120, it was Hooda, who was unfortunately run out for 21 by Kuldeep in the 16th, following a miscommunication with Yuvraj. Just four runs later, it was the in form Ben Cutting, who fell for an unfortunate duck to Kuldeep again, after being stumped by Robin Uthappa in the next over.
As the score approached the 150-run mark, it was just five runs before, when Yuvraj Singh was dismissed for a strong innings of 44, after being played on by Jason Holder, in the 19th over, as Yuvraj went for a sweep, but directed the ball towards his stumps. Meanwhile, in the process, Yuvraj also completed his 4,000 runs in T20 career. Just a couple of runs later, it was their wicketkeeper-batsman Naman Ojha, who fell for mere seven to Holder again in the same over, after being caught behinf by Uthappa, owing to a faint knick.
The final over saw a couple of big hits from Bipul Sharma, before Bhuvneshwar Kumar fell for a mere single to Morkel, after being caught by Manish Pandey at covers, as SRH finished on a fighting total of 162 for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs, thus allowing KKR to need 163 runs to qualify for Qualifier 2.
