In the first Test, after declaring on their overnight total of 247 for six against Zimbabwe with 412 set as target for victory on the final day, Sri Lanka were under threat of being held to a draw as the hosts skipper Cremer once again proved to be the thorn in their side with his stubborn 43. But Herath finished with figures of 3 for 38, which included the key wickets of Cremer and Sean Williams, and Perera took 3 for 34 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 186 with just 7.3 overs left in the game. The DRS system was not used in the first match and in the second Test DRS system will come into place.

While India has refused to use the system in the past because it did not believe that the technology it is based on was foolproof, countries such as Zimbabwe have not had the funds required for it. Six of the seven incorrect umpiring decisions in the first Test were in Sri Lanka s favour, as the tourists won by 225 runs. The system will also be used in the triangular one-day series that follows, when Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka will be joined by the West Indies.
