Satyajit Ray is arguably the greatest film director India has ever produced. Ray was a creative genius and his skills didn’t just end with film direction. He was an accomplished music composer, lyricist, artist and an author.
Ray also had cricket connections. His granduncle Saradaranjan Ray had founded the Dacca College Cricket Club, and later the Town Club in Calcutta. Saradaranjan, also compiled the first book on the laws of cricket in Bengali, that too in early 1880s.
Ray’s uncle, Nripendra Mohan “Kartick” Bose played 44 First-Class matches for Bengal and was a member of the team that won the Ranji Trophy in 1938-39.
Ray himself was a spin bowler, who played for Calcutta University and later instilled the same attribute in ‘Feluda’, a popular detective and one of the most loved characters in Bengali literature. In the story Badshahi Angti (The Emperor’s Ring), Feluda by his own admission said he was an “off-spinner” and also searched for a Neville Cardus’ book.
