An era in Sri Lankan cricket came to an emotional close as Angelo Mathews bid farewell to Test cricket in Galle. Having earlier confirmed that the opening Test against Bangladesh at the Galle International Stadium would be his last in the format, Mathews finished with scores of 39 and 8. The match eventually ended in a draw, with rain contributing to the deadlock.

Mathews, who made his international debut in November 2008 against Zimbabwe, retires as as Sri Lanka’s third-highest run-scorer in Test cricket with 8,214 runs at an average of 44.40, trailing only Kumar Sangakkara (12,400) and Mahela Jayawardene (11,814).

Mathews 33 Test wickets

The seam-bowling all-rounder finished his impressive 16-year Test career with 33 wickets, including a four-wicket haul, along with 16 centuries and 45 fifties. It was only fitting that such a legendary player received a farewell worthy of his contributions.

Mathews was given a guard of honour

Mathews was given a guard of honour by both the Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi teams, followed by a unique kite tribute from someone at the scenic seaside venue.

ICC Chairman Jay Shah also responded to Angelo Mathews’ retirement, extending his best wishes to the former Sri Lankan captain. “Congratulations on an incredible Test career, Angelo Mathews! Scoring over 8000 runs over 16 years reflects your commitment and endurance in the longest format, setting a great example for future generations,” he wrote on X.
