‘Depending on who’s retiring…’: Graeme Smith shares his take on why there are no Indians in SA20 auction

With the SA20 auctions are to begin soon- on September 9- Graeme Smith shared his take on why there are no Indians in this event.

Though the Asia Cup 2025 is approaching, the SA20 is also a tournament set to begin soon, with the auction for the event set to be held on September 9 in Johannesburg- the same day as the opener for the Asia Cup. A total of 241 overseas players will be under the hammer in the auction.

Apart from being held on the very same day as the Asia Cup opener, one standout thing of the SA20 auction is that no Indian player is featured in the upcoming auction, and former South African legend Graeme Smith- who is also the League commissioner of the event- has called this situation as “fluid“.

241 overseas players, along with 308 South Africans are going to go under the hammer for 25 and 59 slots respectively. One thing to be noted is that there is no Indian player in the final shortlist. Even though some of the former Indians registered, no one made it to the shirtlist.

Indian players is always a fluid situation depending on who’s retiring and who’s available. I think it was like 13 or 14 Indian players in the auction,” Graeme Smith said in a virtual interaction.

It was reported that 13-14 Indian pros like Piyush Chawla, Siddharth Kaul and Imran Khan had registered for the auctions, but none of them reached the final cut. This is usually because of the strict policy of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) does not allow an active Indian player to participate in overseas league.
