The 2007 World Cup format was scrapped after ICC realised that a single upset can cost bigger teams a chance to move forward in the competition, a fate India and Pakistan suffered in that edition. The teams were reduced to 14 and it was back to the two group format.

The Decision Review System (DRS) made its first appearance to World Cup and unlike the previous edition, the tournament hosted in the subcontinent after a period of 15 years was nothing short of excitement.

In home conditions, India were the favourites and they did justice to the tag, when they went on to lift the cup on April 2 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The scenes in the country were maddening. The whole nation celebrated the momentous feat by MS Dhoni’s men. Sachin Tendulkar, who was appearing in his sixth World Cup, finally managed to get his hands on the trophy. All-rounder Yuvraj Sing was awarded the player of the tournament.
