‘Go and play 50-overs…’: Former Indian cricketer asked Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play domestic cricket before ODI World Cup

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are only active in the ODI format, aiming to play the 2027 World Cup. Former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta has advised the pair to feature in domestic cricket till then in order to keep their form.

The stellar pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are no longer a part of India’s T20I and Test format. Both of them are now to be seen only in the One-Day format. This superstar duo will now only be seen in action in Australia in a three-match ODI series.

Since Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from the T20Is and Tests within just a year, there are now concerns on whether they will be able to represent the nation till the 2027 ODI World Cup, with not many ODI matches in between. Amid all these speculations, former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta has suggested the duo to play domestics in England and Australia.

In an interaction with RevSportz, Deep Dasgupta stated that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will only be able to play 8-9 ODI matches till the 2027 World Cup. Desgupta also mentioned that the pair need to play domestic cricket in England, Australia and South Africa in order to stay in their form.

For example, IPL will be there for two months. Then they will be playing 7-8 ODIs or maybe 8-9. Now between that, you’ve got the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Then, if they want, they can go and play 50 overs in England. So you have options to keep playing cricket, might not be at the highest level or international, but you still have,” Dasgupta said.

I don’t know if there is a possibility, maybe go to South Africa or maybe go to Australia and play some 50-over games there. I know, as far as England is concerned, that’s definitely an option. I don’t know much about the rules involved with South Africa, Australia though, but the bottom line is the hunger. If they are hungry enough, they will find a way,” he added.
