Hike in IPL Ticket price? Rise in GST set to affect Cricket fans: Explained!

The government has increased the GST on Indian Premier League (IPL) tickets from 28% to 40%, raising prices for fans.

The cost of Indian Premier League (IPL) tickets is set to rise due to the government decision to increase the GST on high-end sports events from 28% to 40%. With the GST increase, IPL tickets will now be taxed at the same rate as casinos and luxury items.

Previously, fans paid Rs 1280 for an IPL ticket priced at Rs 1000. The same ticket will now cost Rs 1400, an increase of Rs 120 due to the GST changes. The GST increase will apply to entry fees for casinos, race clubs, and sporting events like the IPL.

The official statement specifically mentioned the IPL, so it’s likely that regular cricket matches will remain subject to 18% GST. Additional costs, such as attending the stadium or purchasing tickets online, will further increase the prices of IPL tickets.

As the government has only mentioned the IPL, it remains unclear whether the same GST increase will apply to other events such as the Indian Super League (ISL) and Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).

The revisions also benefit moviegoers, as tickets priced up to Rs 100 will now incur only a 5% GST. However, tickets priced over Rs 100 will continue to attract an 18% GST.

Furthermore, the GST on ‘gloves specially designed for use in sports’ has decreased from 12% to 5%. A similar change has been announced for ‘sports goods (other than those for general physical exercise),’ which will now be taxed at 5%.
