IN PICS: ICC World Cup 2019, Afghanistan vs Bangladesh, Match 31

Shakib Al Hasan stars as Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by 62 runs.

Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib won the toss and elected to bowl first after the start of play was delayed 10 minutes by light rain. @AFP

Shakib was unable to turn his solid start into another century however, with Rahman pinning him lbw to leave Bangladesh on 143-3 in the 30th over. Rahman was in the groove and 18-year-old spinner removed Soumya for three with another teasing delivery. @AFP

Liton Das was promoted ahead of Soumya Sarkar to open along with Tamim Iqbal for Bangladesh, with the pair managing a brisk 23 from the first four overs. But Das fell for 16 in the next over after being fooled into a miscued drive by Mujeeb Ur Rahman. @AFP

Shakib, who became the leading run-getter in the World Cup 2019, surpassing David Warner, brought up his half-century in 66 balls — his fifth score of 50 or more in this tournament — to huge cheers from the Bangladesh fans who made up the majority of the crowd. @AFP

However, Shakib then derailed the Afghanistan chase. The Bangladeshi veteran scalped three quick wickets, dismissing Naib, Mohammad Nabi and Asghar Afghan as Afghanistan were reduced to 117/5 from 104/2. @AFP

Tamim and Shakib Al Hasan then put on their fourth successive fifty partnership in one-day internationals. But having been hit for a boundary the ball before, Mohammad Nabi responded with a flighted turner that bowled Tamim for 36. @AFP

Mushfiqur Rahim, who had scored a hundred during Bangladesh’s last game against Australia, continued his good run of form and scored 83. While he could not bring up his second successive ton, he helped Bangladesh cross 260-run mark. @AFP

Naib, Afghanistan skipper, who had scalped two wickets, meanwhile scored 47 runs. The right-hander hit three fours during his 75-ball stay in the middle. @AFP

Needing 263 runs to win, Afghanistan were unable to establish any momentum on a slow Southampton pitch. Shakib Al Hasan’s introduction into the Bangladesh bowling attack brought the breakthrough. Rahmat carelessly flicked a flatter delivery to Tamim Iqbal at mid-on and departed for 24. @AFP

Just 10 runs came from the next five overs and Hashmatullah Shahidi perished when he tried to accelerate, stumped by Mushfiqur Rahim off Mosaddek Hossain for 11. @AFP
