IN PICS: ICC World Cup 2019, England vs Pakistan, Match 6

With a 14-run win over England, Pakistan ended their 11-match losing streak.

While Chris Woakes could only scalp one wicket, the England allround held on to as many as four catches, including one on his own bowling. @AFP

Pakistan, who have lost their past 11 completed one-day internationals, including a 4-0 series defeat to England, went on the attack from the start, with Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq giving their side early momentum. But a stand of 82 ended when Fakhar was stumped by Jos Buttler off Moeen for 36. @AFP

Babar Azam completed a run-a-ball fifty before he too fell to the Moeen-Woakes combination while Hafeez, cashing in on his reprieve, hit a six and four off successive balls from leg-spinner Rashid on his way to a 39-ball fifty. Hafeez lofted a loose legside delivery from Wood for six to go into the 80s, only to fall when he drove a catch to Woakes at long-off. @AFP

Imam holed out for 44 when he lofted Moeen only for Woakes, running round from long-off, to hold an excellent diving catch. @AFP

For all the talk about England’s quicks, it was off-spinner Moeen Ali who took the first three wickets Monday on his way to figures of three for 50. @AFP

Sarfaraz Ahmed, Pakistani skipper, maintained the momentum with a 40-ball fifty before getting out after scoring 55 off 44 balls, hitting 5 fours. @AFP

Pakistan were undone by a barrage of bouncers against the West Indies and England, unsurprisingly, deployed similar tactics after captain Eoin Morgan won the toss, with their attack featuring recalled fast bowler Mark Wood. @AFP

England’s chase got off to a bad start when Jason Roy was lbw on the sweep to leg-spinner Shadab Khan to leave them 12 for one. @AFP

Jonny Bairstow, whose opening partnership with Roy has been a key factor in England’s rise to number one in the one-day international rankings, then fell for 32 when he was caught behind off Wahab Riaz. @AFP

It was the spinners who struck next, England captain Eoin Morgan (nine) bowled by Mohammad Hafeez before Pakistan captain and wicket-keeper Sarfaraz Ahmed held an edged cut by all-rounder Ben Stokes (13) off Shoaib Malik. @AFP

Joe Root (107) and Jos Buttler (103) were guiding the tournament favourites towards an imposing target of 349 after Pakistan left England needing a World Cup record chase. The pair put on 130 for the fifth wicket but both were out shortly after reaching their hundreds and the tail had too much to do. @AFP

Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir, who were recalled to the Pakistan’s World Cup squad after earlier being not picked, shared five wickets between themselves, with the former being the leading wicket-taker for Pakistan in the match. @AFP

It was a remarkable turnaround for Pakistan, whose opening match of this World Cup had seen then slump to 105 all out in a seven-wicket defeat by the West Indies at the same ground. With the win over England, Pakistan also ended their 11-match losing streak. @AFP
