In pics: India vs Australia, 3rd Test, Day 2

Australia were 8/0 in reply after India declared their innings on 443 for 7 riding on Cheteshwar Pujara's century and fifties from Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal.

Overnight batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli played out the first session without losing their wickets. Resuming on 215 for 2, they extended India’s total to 277 for 2 by lunch. The overnight pair increased their alliance to 154, leaving Australia searching for a wicket for 62.1 overs. (AFP Image)

Continuing his fine form in the series, Pujara scored his second century of the series and 17th overall in Tests. He nudged, deflected and left with confidence and his twinkle-toed brilliance to Nathan Lyon nullified the threat of the offspinner. A fierce square-drive for four off Mitchell Starc wide of point put him into the eighties, an even better shot wide of mid-on for four off Lyon got him into the nineties. Finally, a flourishing punch past mid-off took him from 96 to 100. (AFP Image)

After toiling hard with nothing to show in the wickets column for over two sessions, Australia finally struck back post lunch. With India on 193 for 2 and firmly set for a big total, Starc and Pat Cummins struck in quick succession to remove the two set batsmen – Pujara and Kohli – in a space of six runs. Bothered by perhaps a back spasm, Kohli upper cut Starc to Aaron Finch at third man before Cummins cleaned up Pujara with a ball that stayed low. (AFP Image)

Having missed out in Adelaide and out of the second Test at Perth with an injury, Rohit batted his way to a 10th Test half-century on a wearing MCG track. Dropped on 15, Rohit, from 13 off 52, accelerated in a bid to provide India quick runs. With five boundaries, Rohit remained unbeaten on 63. (AFP Image)

Rohit was aided by crucial knocks from Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant, with whom he constructed partnerships of 62 and 76 respectively and guided India past the 400-run mark. With India searching for quick runs, they lost Pant and Ravindra Jadeja before Virat Kohli announced the declaration with the score on 443 for 7. (AFP Image)

India gave themselves seven overs to have a crack at Australia, but to the credit of the hosts, openers Aaron Finch and Marcus Harris played out the overs despite the odd ball staying low. Harris copped a blow to his head as Australia played out three maidens to finish the day on 8/0. (AFP Image)
