Alzarri Joseph's dream debut, which saw him register the best bowling figures in IPL history, helped Mumbai defend a modest total of 136.

Sunrisers raced away to 27 without loss in the first three overs, but for the first time this season, lost a wicket inside Powerplay when legspinner Rahul Chahar had Jonny Bairstow miscue a swing to Jasprit Bumrah at short point. (BCCI Image)

Chahar finished with 2 for 21, also getting Yusuf Pathan out caught at deep backward square leg. Krunal Pandya bowled two overs to give away nine runs and together, the spinners applied pressure on Sunrisers in their chase. (BCCI Image)

How do you do one better than picking up a five-wicket haul on IPL debut? By registering the best-ever IPL bowling figures. With Sunrisers needing 46 to win off the final three overs, Joseph had Kaul out caught behind to finish with 6 for 12, the best-ever figures by a bowler in an IPL, surpassing Sohail Tanvir’s 6 for 14 in the very first edition. Joseph, who had accounted for Warner and Vijay Shankar’s wickets in his first spell, returned for his second spell and immediately removed Deepak Hooda and Rashid Khan off consecutive deliveries. Sidharth Kaul returned figures of 2 for 34 and got the wickets of Quinton de Kock and Krunal Pandya as Mumbai Indians struggled to get going in the middle overs. (BCCI Image)

After Bhuvneshwar Kumar opted to bowl, Mohammad Nabi continued his fine form with the ball and provided Sunrisers Hyderabad their first breakthrough, getting skipper Rohit Sharma out cheaply. (BCCI Image)

Kieron Pollard took 39 off the last two overs and remained unbeaten on 46 off 26 to power Mumbai Indians to 136 for 7. Pollard struck two boundaries and four sixes – three in the penultimate over to ensure Mumbai crossed the 130-run mark, a scenario which looked tough at the half-way mark. (BCCI Image)

Hardik Pandya scored a run-a-ball 14. With Mumbai’s hopes resting on the allrounder’s shoulders, Hardik smoked a six off Rashid, but was out caught in the deep two balls later as his sweep found Vijay Shankar at deep fine leg. (BCCI Image)

In addition to not getting the scoreboard to tick, Mumbai were also pegged back by the fact that they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Except Yusuf Pathan, all Sunrisers bowlers had at least one wicket to show. (BCCI Image)

Off his first delivery in the IPL, Alzarri Joseph clean bowled David Warner for 15. The left-handed opener struck two boundaries before throwing his bat at a slower one from the West Indies pacer. (BCCI Image)
