Infographic: KL Rahul, the first Indian to score a century on ODI debut

KL Rahul is a lucky folk that he got to play the following Test at Sydney after his horrendous outing on Test debut at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). How many get an opportunity to play their first match at MCG and Rahul played two pathetic strokes that too at critical junctures as India escaped a defeat. He made amends by scoring a classical hundred on his second Test and on Saturday exorcised the ghosts of his Test debut as he went on to become the first Indian to register a century on ODI debut. Hundreds on Test debut are not as rare when compared to ODIs. Rahul became only the 11th player overall to get to this feat. In doing so, he surpassed his state teammate Robin Uthappa’s record for the highest individual score on ODI debut for India. Uthappa’s 86 against England on ODI debut in 2006 stood tall for over a decade.

In the last six years, this is the seventh instance when someone scored a hundred on ODI debut with the last batsman prior to Rahul being Mark Chapman of Hong Kong. The list features some of the big names like Dennis Amiss, Desmond Haynes, Andy Flower, Martin Guptill, etc. Phil Hughes too got the feat in 2013. A prolific List A cricketer, his flourishing career was cut short by untimely demise. ALSO READ: Twitterati hail KL Rahul on becoming first Indian to score a ton on ODI debut

Rahul might not feature in the XI once India field their full strength side i.e. when Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan return as openers but it is always good to make the most of your chances.
