IPL 2019: Lowest team totals in the history of IPL

While the IPL, or rather T20 cricket in general has always been about batsman hitting the poor bowlers all over the park, there are days when the bowlers have their say.

It is such a great irony that four years – to the day – after Chris Gayle’s brutal 175 not out lead Royal Challengers Bangalore to IPL’s highest-ever total and the highest in T20 cricket as well with a mammoth 263/5 against Pune Warriors India, that they succumbed to IPL’s lowest-ever total of 49 against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 23, 2017 at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. RCB had done well to restrict KKR to just 131 at their home, but little did Virat Kohli envisage a royal collapse from his team. The highest individual score was 7 off 17 balls from Gayle, as RCB were shot down in just 9.4 overs. While RCB lost their first five wickets for 40 runs – with the wickets of Kohli (0), Mandeep Singh (1), AB de Villiers (8), Kedar Jadhav (9) and Gayle (7), their last five could only add nine more runs. For KKR, Nathan-Coulter-Nile grabbed 3/21, Chris Woakes took 3/6 and Colin de Grandhomme scalped 3/4.

Rajasthan Royals were first stunned by the swing of Praveen Kumar at the Newlands Cape Town in the second edition of the IPL played in South Africa and later by Anil Kumble’s freakish spell of 3.1-1- 5-5 as they succumbed to 58 all out in 15.1 overs chasing 134 to win against Royal Challengers Bangalore. While RCB also did not fare that well after winning the toss and found themselves tottering 17/3 early on, on a challenging track, it was Rahul Dravid’s 48-bal 66 that helped RCB to a decent enough total. In reply, RR were rocked with Kumar removing the openers and Jesse Ryder’s dibbly-dobbly accounting for two more wickets. But Kumble’s spell put the final nail in RR’s coffin as they succumbed to a 75-run defeat.

Chasing a huge total of 213 at their home ground of the Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) were shot down for a mere 66. Lendl Simmons (66) and Kieron Pollard (63*) had powered Mumbai Indians to 212/3, thus confirming that there was no demons on the Kotla track. Yet, Delhi succumbed on the sluggish track to be bundled out in the 13.4 overs, courtesy Harbhajan Singh’s 3/22 and Karn Sharma’s 3/11. Karun Nair top-scored with 21 for Delhi while Corey Anderson and Pat Cummins managed to reach double-figure marks with 10 runs each.

Daredevils had a season to forget with the bat in 2017 as they were dismissed for 67 against Kings XI Punjab, week before they were shot down for 66 against Mumbai Indians. This came at Chandigarh with hometown player Sandeep Sharma wreaking havoc with a spell of 4/20 in his four overs. After being put in to bat, Delhi survived 17.1 overs, but only skipper Karun Nair (11), Corey Anderson (18) and Kagiso Rabada (11) managed to put some total of the board. For KXIP, Azar Patel and Varun Aaron claimed two wickets each. In defence of the small total, Daredevils failed to put up any kind of fight as KXIP cantered home with ten wickets in hand and 12.1 overs remaining.

Kolkata Knight Riders had a day to forget at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai in the inaugural edition of the IPL against Mumbai Indians, succumbing to their lowest total in the IPL history. After being put into bat at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, KKR were foxed by the medium pace of Shaun Pollock, Dwayne Bravo, Dominic Thornely and Rohan Raje. Only Sourav Ganguly (15), Ajit Agarkar (15) and Salman Butt (13) managed to register double-figure mark.
