Sanju Samson quits leadership role ahead of Asia Cup 2025 clash

Sanju Samson ends his maiden KCL campaign with Kochi Blue Tigers, stepping down from leadership duties as he prepares to join Team India for Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE.

The Kochi Blue Tigers, a team in the Kerala Cricket League (KCL), announced Mohammed Shanu as their new vice-captain on Tuesday, taking Sanju Samson’s place.

Sanju Samson will temporarily leave the KCL due to the abrupt change in leadership, as he will be joining the Indian team in the United Arab Emirates for the Asia Cup, which starts on September 9.

Thanks to an outstanding knock from Sanju Samson, who scored 83 off 41 deliveries, the Kochi Blue Tigers defeated Alleppey Ripples by a commanding 3-wicket margin and guaranteed their place in the semifinals.

Sanju Samson had a stellar KCL campaign.

Sanju amassed 368 runs in five innings during his first KCL season, including three half-centuries and a century. He was captained by his older brother Saly, an all-rounder who not only scored runs but also dominated with the most sixes and a remarkable batting average of 74.

For the first two games, Sanju chose to bat lower in the order. He returned to his preferred opening position in the third game after the reigning champions Kollam Sailors set a record KCL score of 236/5. Sanju’s outstanding 121-run innings, which featured 14 boundaries and seven sixes, gave his team a 4-wicket victory.

It will be difficult for the Blue Tigers going forward without their star batsman, Sanju, who was crucial to their run to the knockout stages.
