Separated by nationality, united by faith

Pakistan-born South African cricketer Imran Tahir has been on a roll of late. With every outing, especially in the limited-overs, his stature is rising in international cricket. Even though he left Pakistan long back and opted to play for his adopted country South Africa, Tahir remains a devout Muslim and offers ‘Namaz’, or prayers, everyday.

Recently, on the eve of South Africa’s match against Afghanistan in the ICC World T20, Tahir was reunited with Inzamam-Ul-Haq, alongside whom he has played First-Class cricket. Inzamam is Afghanistan’s batting coach these days. On this occasion, Tahir was invited by Inzy to the Afghan camp to offer the customary prayers.

Tahir happily joined the Afghanistan players, as they all offered prayers which were led by Inzamam. The bonhomie players shared ahead of the match made for a good view. It was Tahir whose prayers were answered as South Africa won the match quite convincingly in the end with the leg-spinner picking up two vital wickets.
