‘Sometimes people fail…’: Gautam Gambhir reflects on India’s lower order collapsing in England

India faced a collapse in the lower-order in both their innings during the first match of the five-match series against England cost them a lot as they faced a 5-wicket defeat by the English team in the series opener.

Even though Centurions Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed heavily, Indian lineup collapsed in the first innings as the score went from 430/3 to just 471 all-out: meaning the team lost 7 wickets for 41 runs. In the second innings, the team went from 333/4 to 364 all-out: implying they lost 6 wickets for 31 runs.

India’s head coach reflected on these errors by the lower-order batters, reflecting his views on the underwhelming performances by tail-enders Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.

Sometimes people fail, and that’s okay. I know it is disappointing and more importantly, I think they are more disappointed than anyone,” Gambhir said following the loss.

It’s not that they’re not working hard in the nets as well. Sometimes these things happen, even the pure batters fail as well. So hopefully they got to learn and hopefully we can have better performances from our tail,” he added.
