Sunil Gavaskar to Shubman Gill: Indians to score a century in their maiden innings as Test captain

Shubman Gill scored a century on Day 1 of the 1st Test between India and England. After this ton, Gill secured his name in elite record list.

Shubman Gill is currently leading Indian side as the red-ball captain for their five-match series against England. Gill was named the leader of the team as Rohit Sharma retired from the longest format of the game a few weeks ahead of the tour. On Day 1 of the first Test of the series, the 25-year-old scored a century, securing his name in list of captains to score a century in their first innings as Test captain.

1) Vijay Hazare

The first player to score a century in their maiden match at as captain of India was legend Vijay Hazare. His knock was interestingly also against England, but it was in Delhi. Vijay had played an innings of 164* in 1951.

2) Sunil Gavaskar

The second name in the list is of another legend, Sunil Gavaskar. His first match as the captain of India was against New Zealand at the Eden Park in Auckland in 1976, where he scored an impressive knock of 116 runs in the first innings.

3) Virat Kohli

Superstar batter Virat Kohli played an impressive knock of 115 runs during his first match as the captain of Indian Test team. This was in 2014 when the team played against Australia in Adelaide. Notably. Kohli scored a century in both the innings of the match.

4) Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill’s name is the latest addition to this list. He scored a century against England in the first innings of ongoing Test match at Headingley, Leeds. As of now (on the end of Day 1), Gill is unbeaten at a score of 127*, and the score will increase as the match progresses.
