Why THIS CSK star failed to perform well in IPL 2025? Coach reveals major reason

Matheesha Pathirana, who was a superstar for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) till now, but failed to have an impact this year. After CSK got out of contention from Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoffs, their bowling coach spoke about the reason for Pathirana's fall.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bowling coach Eric Simons has defended Matheesha Pathirana, for his poor performance with the bowl in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Eric said that the batters from opposing team have started understanding and facing him better.

Five-time champions CSK got knocked out of the IPL playoff race as they lost to Punjab Kings (PBKS) on April 30. Their head coach had also stated that Pathirana’s form fell due to a change in action.

Simmons said in the post-match press conference, “It is clear that there has been a slight change in the action. It cannot be said that his accuracy has been affected but batsmen are now playing him better. We saw this especially against Mumbai Indians. They have started to understand his balls well and are able to play better,”

Pathirana has taken nine wickets in eight matches this season at an economy of 10.39. He bowled many wide balls. Simmons said, “He has to keep improving. Bowlers and batsmen all have to keep improving their game.”

He said that Chennai will have to play more smartly in crucial moments to win the match. He said, “We will have to perform well in the big overs. We will have to play more smartly in the crucial moments of the match.”

CSK lost to PBKS

For those unversed, after the loss to PBKS on April 30, Chennai Super Kings are now out of the playoff race in IPL 2025. Chennai has become the first team to be out of the playoff race this season.
