Bangladesh is all set to hosts Afghanistan for their first ever bilateral series from September 25 to October 1 at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur. Bangladesh and Afghanistan will be playing three One-Day International (ODI) series here. Bangladesh and Afghanistan have faced each other thrice in the international arena, twice in ODIs and once for Twenty20 International (T20I) game. The first time these teams came together was in Asia up 2014, where Afghanistan took the lead. The second time Bangladesh avenged their earlier defeat and leveled the ties between these teams in ICC T20 World Cup 2014. The recent one clash between these teams was in ICC World Cup 2015 in Australia.

Bangladesh have already announced their squads for the Bangladesh and England ODI series with the inclusion of three uncapped players. Bangladesh Under-19 player Mehedi Hasan Miraz, pacer Subhashis Roy and all-rounder Alauddin Babu have made cut in the national side. Apart from these, Bangladesh will miss out on some of their crucial bowlers like Mustafizur Rahman, who underwent knee injury in London along with Arafat Sunny, who was suspended for unusual bowling action. However, Taskin Ahmed, who was also caught in the act, has received nod from the Bangladesh selection board for the ODI series.

The other players who have been excluded from the squad are leg-spinner Jubair Hossain, wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Kumar Das and pacer Kamran Islam Rabbi. Bangladesh have retained their usual star players like Mashrafe Mortaza, Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Anamul Haque, Shakib-al Hasan, Mahmadullah, Mushfiqur Rahim, Sabbir Rahman and others. Bangladesh played their last ODI against Zimbabwe in November, that they comfortably won by 3-0. However, with no ODI experience further, it could possibly hamper their game against Afghanistan who are coming with recent ODI experience against Scotland, Ireland and Netherlands.

Afghanistan’s series against Ireland ended in a draw. There were some high performance by the squad that included fifties from captain Mohammad Shahzad and Najibullah Zadran coupled with excellent bowling from Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan. Bangladesh also saw some useful contribution from players like Asghar Stanikzai, Nabi and Rashid with the bat as well. With Afghanistan’s strong batting line-up, Bangladesh will have a task on hand. Dawlat Zadran, Hamid Hassan can also come handy with ball at the time of need. As for the previous match against Scotland, Najibullah and Shah’s blistering partnership broke all the odds and took their side to total of 283 with the help of the latter’s century in the first ODI.

Shahzad has been the talking point for Afghanistan in limited-overs cricket as he has always come up with a fifty in almost every game. It was the same even in ICC T20 World Cup 2016 and Asia Cup T20 2016. However, they were unable to create a mark in group stages unlike Bangladesh who reached the final stage of Asia Cup T20 2016. As both the teams meet for the first time and meeting after a year, there will batting galore for sure and class bowling from both the ends.

As Afghanistan are new to this venue, Bangladesh are at an advantage with regards to the stadium. Bangladesh have played total 29 ODIs in this venue and have won 36 matches out of which two were drawn and abandoned respectively. Bangladesh come with yet another advantage as they have won the last four ODIs.

This will be testing time for Afghanistan as they will want to continue their dream run of ODIs against Bangladesh, while the hosts previous win against Zimbabwe will be the only hope to keep them alive in this series against Afghanistan. This will be the moment where they can prepare themselves for the tough series against England after this series.
