Reigning Test champions India face off against former Test champions England, on Day 1 of the fourth of five-Test series, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai from Thursday. The hosts India, are certainly in the driver's seat, following twin successive wins in the second and third Test, at Vishakhapatnam and Mohali, respectively, as they possess an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, and would definitely be aiming for a win here, as it would seal the series in their favour. England, on the other hand, would be fighting to stay alive in the series, not just in this tie, but also the next tie, that is to be played in Chennai from next week.
India certainly look like the stronger side here, as they have been consistently scoring big runs, with the batsmen contributing; claiming wickets as well, with the bowlers, especially the spinners spinning it apart, while the fielding too has been outstanding, as we have seen Ajinkya Rahane's brilliant one-handed works at the slips. Nevertheless, the hosts are yet to field the strongest side in the series, as recent injuries to KL Rahul, Wriddhiman Saha, and Rohit Sharma have barred skipper Virat Kohli from doing so. Gautam Gambhir, who replaced Rahul, could not do much, while Parthiv Patel came in for Saha, after an 8-year long gap.
Full Cricket Updates: India vs England 4th Test at Mumbai, Day 1
Despite the results in favour of India, the hosts have never managed to come up with the proper and desired team selection, as they would have like to have in the series. There are also a couple of latest injury reports, as Ajinkya Rahane has been ruled out from the series with a hand injury, bringing in Manish Pandey, who earns his maiden Test call, while Mohammed Shami too is nursing a knee injury, thus bringing in Shardul Thakur, a local lad, who can make a good impact in his debut game, especially in his home turf.
Meanwhile, Kohli has confirmed that Rahul, who is eventually to play this tie, will be featuring in the playing XI, and is all set to open the innings as an opener with Murali Vijay. His inclusion in the team means wicketkeeper-batsman and opener Parthiv is likely to be pushed a place of couple, down the order, while Karun Nair, is likely to sit out, and will have to wait for his second opportunity in the next and final tie probably.
Speaking on the English side, the 19-year old opener in the form of Haseeb Hammed, who was sensational ever since his debut, has unfortunately been ruled out of the series due to injury. His scores of 9, 59*, 13, 25, 31 and 82 were enough to prove that he was one gem of an opener, and Cook is ought to miss him in his side. Therefore, the question would now be, whom will he pick in the batting department to fill in Hameed's spot?

INDIA SKIPPER VIRAT KOHLI - Mentions that it is a very special feeling to win the series. Adds that when he was taking a victory lap with Ashwin, he had a chat with him that last time we were playing England here and lost the game mentally. Adds that they were mentally strong this time around and after they got a 231-run lead, the opposition was deflated. Adds that our batsmen adjusted well to the bounce on this track. Mentions that Murali Vijay was not quite going well in the series but adjusted beautifully to play a champion knock. Jayant Yadav was very very special and played a terrific knock. Adds that we were 2-0 up and he got going from the beginning. Adds that it helped him to capitalize on his innings. Mentions that when they got close to 400 they took control. Mentions that going 3-0 up will allow them to really express themselves in the Chennai test. Feels that the batsmen need to apply themselves on this track and even the bowlers. Adds that they had an advantage as England had a spinner less. Opines that Ashwin is out there to win the man of the match award whenever he comes out to play and even the man of the series. Mentions that the batsmen play second fiddle to him as he has been superb with the bat. Adds that he is a very intelligent guy and he is delighted to have him in the team. Mentions that the English side played high risk shots and they are not very confident in their defense. Feels that this has been a difference between the two sides and the Indian batsmen have enjoyed their defense. Mentions that probably the change in mindset has done the trick.
ENGLAND SKIPPER ALASTAIR COOK - Feels that 400 was a pretty good score on this wicket. Mentions that they had an opportunity to get 400 plus but feels 400 was a good score on this wicket. Adds that they had a chance as India were 300-6 but Virat Kohli played a terrific knock and Jayant Yadav played really well too. Opines that they couldn't win the key moments. Mentions that it was a wrong decision to go for the fourth seamer but Ali and Rashid bowled really well. Mentions that they will look at the bowling composition going forward. Feels that they have had their chances but haven't been good enough to get over the line. Feels that bowling a lot of overs makes the spinners get tired. Even Ashwin gets tired when he bowls a lot of overs. Mentions that they scored over 600 runs in this game. Adds that they batted well than the previous games but couldn't bowl out India under 400. Feels that Virat is in incredible form. Adds that he is one of the best batsmen of our generation.
The hosts came in really well with the ball as they saw the visitors struggling at 49/3. Root and Bairstow stuck it out in between for sometime with Root but he soon started loosing partners on the other end. Indians finished the day in style as they got a wicket of the last ball and ended on a high where the visitors were seen struggling at 182/6 on stumps.
India got their act right as they posted a huge total on the board in reply. Vijay was the one who started of the act in style. Kohli came in on the third day of the test match and kept going for his third double century of this year. Vijay also got to his hundred. They looked crippling for a moment when they lost their middle order in quick succession. Jayant came in and stuck it out with Kohli to strike a 241 run-partnership. Jayant Yadav also got to his maiden Test ton. India managed to take a really good lead of 231 runs.
England would have been happy with their bat in the first innings where they were shown the path by the debutant Jennings who started off with a ton. Moeen Ali and Buttler also chipped up with some vital fifties. The spin duo got all the quota of wickets where Ashwin got 6 for 112 and Jadeja managed to notch four on the other hand.
India have taken an unassailable lead of 3-0 in the five match Test Series. They have finished off the final day in just more than half an hour of play. Ashwin and Jadeja continued from where they stopped yesterday as Ashwin took out all the remaining wickets. Bairstow the only fighter who carried his bat overnight was sent back really quickly today and that opened the flood gates.
Virat Kohli is leading his troops for a victory lap around the Wankhede stadium. The crowds are really loud and are up on their legs cheering them.
