India were outplayed by a brilliant Sri Lankan side in the Wills World Cup 1996 semi-final at Eden Gardens. The crowd could not digest the disappointment and resort to hooliganism, bringing the match to an abrupt halt. Match-referee Clive Lloyd had no option but to award the match to the Lankans by default.
