The in-form batsman  surpassed former captain Ricky Ponting’s national record of most number of runs in a calendar year (1,544) in the Boxing Day Test match against Sri Lanka at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Thursday.
 

Clarke reached the landmark in the first session as Australia gained a 82-run lead on the second day of the second Test.
