The fifth One-Day International (ODI) between England and Pakistan at Cardiff witnessed a funny yet painful incident when Ben Stokes was struck by a short of length delivery by Umar Gul. Stokes was looking good on 44 as England were well placed at 214 for the loss of four wickets. On the first delivery of the 37th over, Stokes looked to pull a short length delivery, which lacked bounce.
The ball took a thick edge of Stokes’ bat and hit his abdominal guard in a flash. Stokes was in all sorts of trouble and looked in extreme pain as soon as the ball struck him. He was on the ground and with a painful look on his face. The area where Stokes was hit is certainly a painful one and every batsman fears off. While all this was going on the field, Joe Root was busy having a laugh from the pavilion.
Stokes went on to score 75 and helped England post 302 on the board. Relive the moment here:
