New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder on Saturday regained consciousness, talking to friends and family as he recovers from an alleged assault in Christchurch earlier this week.

Ryder was rushed to hospital early on Thursday with serious head injuries after being involved in two altercations outside a bar and fast food restaurant in Merivale, a suburb of Christchurch.

Witnesses said Ryder was left "shaking, vomiting and covered in blood" after he was repeatedly punched and kicked.

Ryder's mother and girlfriend, who were at his bedside when he woke up, have described the beating as a "heinous crime".
