Abraham Benjamin de Villiers, widely known as AB de Villiers is arguably the best batsman in the world today. De Villiers is an extraordinary fielder as well. Many cricket experts call him as the second coming of Jonty Rhodes. De Villiers is a South African of Dutch descent. He took to cricket in his school days. Not many people know that this entertaining batter was also good at many other sports viz. rugby, hockey, tennis and swimming . He was shortlisted for South Africa’s junior hockey team. If we say that he is a Leonardo da Vinci of sports it won’t be wrong. PHOTO: AB de Villiers spends time with son in Mauritius ahead of South Africa tour of India 2015
In this video, he takes a diving catch at slip off Makhaya Ntini’s bowling to dismiss New Zealand batter Scott Styris. De Villiers is stationed at third slip and Styris knicks the ball. The ball is travelling towards the second slip and before the second slip could react, he dives ahead of him to take the catch moving towards his wrong side i.e. left. It was a really tough catch which shows how quick de Villiers reacts and how well he judges the ball. But this is just one of the many brilliant catches that he has taken. De Villiers is a class act and at the same time a humble cricketer. This combination is not very often seen in cricket. He even took to wicketkeeping in some matches and to good effect.
