Adam Lyth hit 96 to help Yorkshire to 263 for nine at the end of their innings against Gloucestershire in the Royal London One-Day Cup semi-final. However, the thing that will haunt Lyth is that he made a Test hundred against New Zealand at his Headingley home ground, but struggled during the Ashes, averaging a mere 12.77 in England’s 3-2 series win over Australia. Lyth’s place is now under threat ahead of England’s departure to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in October for three Tests against Pakistan. Moeen Ali has been touted as a possible replacement for Lyth in the UAE, a move that would allow England to play two spinners on pitches known to aid turn, as reported by AFP. Adam Lyth: Fantastic to score maiden Test ton at my home ground
Lyth has not been in form off late and has said to his friends that he will try and perform much better in the upcoming matches. 27-year old left-hander’s highest score in recently concluded Ashes 2015 was 37. During Ashes Lyth was found wanting against the moving ball and consistently edged it to the wicket-keeper and slip cordon. The Australian fast bowlers capitalised on his weekness. “The Aussies have bowled well in testing conditions, I have copped some decent balls but I’ve played some bad shots which I’m disappointed about but that’s cricket and you go through spells like that. I’m not one to point at excuses at all, I’ve been hitting the ball well all summer but I just haven’t done it out in the middle in this Ashes series,” he said in an open letter to the fans following his poor Ashes 2015 run.
