England captain Alastair Cook presented the trophy to Guildford who won NatWest U13 National Club Championship Finals. Guildford were joined at the round-robin final at Oundle School by Barnt Green (Worcestershire) who were also at the finals in 2014, along with Grange (Scotland), Oakham (Leicestershire & Rutland), Eastcote (Middlesex) and Parley (Dorset). At stumps on the third day, England, following-on, were 203 for six — still 129 runs behind Australia’s first innings 481, which featured Steven Smith’s 143. It looked as if left-handed opener Cook would bat until the close. But outgoing Australia captain Michael Clarke‘s typically inventive decision to bring on Smith in the 77th over yielded a quick dividend when the part-time leg-spinner struck with just his sixth ball as Cook was caught off bat and pad by Adam Voges at short leg, reports AFP. Seldom has a batsman displayed such mindless appetite for runs the way Cook has. He has owns most aggregate records by Englishmen, and is already touted as one of the finest in the pantheon of English champions at the top of the order. He is not yet 30, and has been, at various stages of his career, been considered by English pundits as the man who will break Sachin Tendulkar’s records in Test cricket.
Cook’s finest hour came when he scored 766, playing a pivotal role in England’s whopping Ashes triumph in Australia in 2010-11. It remains the second-best for any English batsman in an Ashes series. He scored a career-best of 294 against Edgbaston the following summer.
