It’s that time of the year, again. Yup, IPL auction is upon us and it’s the second time in 2018 that cricketers are going to go under the hammer. The impending general elections in India mean the next IPL season will have an early start and possibly, at an overseas venue meaning the much-awaited auction is being held on December 18 (Tuesday) in Jaipur.
From an initial hopeful 1003 cricketers, the final list has been pruned to 346 players of which 226 are Indians and 120 overseas.
There are a couple of major changes from the past auction. IPL has a different auctioneer, yup. Richard Madley has been replace by Hugh Edmeades. Next major change is the timing. While traditionally, the event starts in the morning, this time keeping in mind the ongoing India’s tour of Australia and the broadcasters intent to grab as many eyeballs as possible, it will start at 2:30 pm (IST) with the venue being Jaipur (Rajasthan).
There are 118 capped and 228 uncapped player with the highest reserve base price being INR 2 crore.
Interestingly, of the nine players who have entered their name in the top bracket, none is Indian. Among Indians, left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat’s is the highest base price (INR 1.5 crore)
Players who have placed their names in the top bracket (base price INR 2 crore) include Corey Anderson, Shaun Marsh, Colin Ingram, Angelo Mathews, Lasith Malinga, Brendon McCullum, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes and D’Arcy Short
The 346 cricketers will be vying for the 70 available spots that franchise are aiming to fill. Of those 70, only 20 slots are for overseas players. The competition is stiff.
